Aphaia EnergyWe are a group of people living in Aegina, who love Aegina, and want to see it develop sustainably while supporting the needs of our community.
We are creating an energy community to bring people together, lower the cost of electricity, contribute to a just green transition, and support art and other ecological practices on the island.
Our first project is to build our own solar farm. You can join us.
Energy communities are cooperatives that allow citizens to participate in the production of energy, through clean, green, and renewable sources, boosting their income, protecting the environment and promoting energy democracy.
Energy democracy means that energy production is not only for a few big companies, but for all of us. We can all take part in the transformation to an world without fossil fuels, with greater justice and equality for all.
An energy community can install and operate their own power station, such as a small solar energy park. The energy produced is sold to the electricity grid, but the costs are taken off the home electricity bills of all the members.
Energy communities invest together, as households, in the construction and maintenance costs of their energy generation.
Energy communities lower the household electricity bills of their members, while increasing the proportion of renewable energy available for everyone.
Our first goal is to build a small solar farm on Aegina. This will generate electricity, the power and profits of which will go directly to the members of Aphaia Energy.
Our aims are:
In addition to generating energy and supporting its members financially, Aphaia Energy is committed to supporting the whole community on Aegina: humans and non-humans. A portion of all investments will be set aside to support low-income households as well as other creative ecological projects.
Anyone living in Aegina or Attica can join the energy community.
Initial membership of the community costs €100. This is a legally required amount, and we need at least 30 members to move to the next stage.
Once the energy community is established, we will organise a round of investment to develop the solar park. Typically in Greece, most households invest between €1500 and €5000, and see a return on their investment in four to five years.
We are planning to hold our first meeting in December 2025.
Aphaia Energy is initiated by Vessel Aegina with the support of Electra Energy.
